ANCADM Domain Overview
Administrative & Personnel is the smallest CST domain, accounting for roughly 4.7% of the exam (7 of 150 scored items). It covers cost containment, electrical/fire safety, interpersonal communication, mentoring, OR scheduling, supply chain management, and professional development.
What to Study First
- Cost containment principles - how preference card accuracy and mindful supply use reduce unnecessary waste.
- Electrical and fire safety basics - recognizing hazards and the fire triangle concept, which overlaps with INTRA electrosurgery content.
- Communication and chain of command - closed-loop communication and how to escalate a patient safety concern appropriately.
- Professional development structure - the distinct roles of NBSTSA (certifying body) and AST (professional association).

Question Strategy
- Because this domain is small, focus on breadth of understanding rather than exhaustive depth - a solid grasp of each subtopic covers most of the tested content.
- Many ANCADM questions test professional judgment and communication scenarios rather than technical clinical facts.
- When in doubt on a professionalism scenario, choose the answer that favors patient safety, honest communication, and appropriate escalation.
Common Traps to Avoid
- Confusing NBSTSA (certification) with AST (professional association/standards) - know which organization does what.
- Underestimating cost containment content - it is tested through practical scenarios, such as recognizing when opening a supply "just in case" creates unnecessary waste.
- Assuming communication questions are purely subjective - the exam expects specific, structured techniques such as closed-loop communication.
