CST BSPH Exam Day - What to Expect
Surgical Pharmacology accounts for 6 of the 150 scored questions on the CST exam (about 4.0%). It is a small but safety-critical domain, and strong preparation here also reinforces medication safety concepts tested within INTRA scenario questions.
What to Bring to Pearson VUE
- Valid, unexpired government-issued photo identification matching your NBSTSA record.
- Your exam confirmation details.
- Nothing else - personal belongings are stored before you enter the testing room.
How BSPH Content Appears
- Selecting the appropriate hemostatic or local anesthetic agent for a described clinical scenario.
- Identifying medication safety violations, such as an unlabeled solution on the sterile field.
- Choosing the correct irrigation solution for a specific procedure type (e.g., monopolar resectoscope cases).
- Basic drug calculation or dilution ratio problems.
Pacing Strategy
With 175 total questions in 240 minutes, average about 82 seconds per question. BSPH contributes only about 6-7 questions, so move through this content efficiently while still applying careful attention to any calculation-based questions, which can take slightly longer to work through.
Managing Uncertainty
If a BSPH question feels unfamiliar, default to the safety-first principle: an unlabeled medication is always discarded, and any medication choice that risks patient harm (such as epinephrine in end-arterial tissue) is never the correct answer, even if it seems clinically plausible in isolation.
After the Exam
A provisional pass/fail result appears immediately after you finish. Your official NBSTSA score report follows within a few days, with a domain-level breakdown provided if a retake is needed.
