Timing and Pacing Strategy
The full CST exam is 175 questions (150 scored, 25 unscored) in 240 minutes - about 82 seconds per question on average. Because INTRA makes up the largest share of scored items, expect roughly 90-100 of your 175 total questions to touch INTRA content in some form, including scenario questions that blend instrumentation, counts, and sterile technique together.
How INTRA Content Appears
- Instrument identification - matching an instrument's name, image, or description to its function or specialty tray.
- Scenario-based sterile technique - a described situation (a dropped instrument, a torn glove, a wet drape) asking for the correct response.
- Count sequencing and discrepancy resolution - multi-step "what happens next" questions.
- Hemostasis method selection - matching a bleeding scenario to the appropriate mechanical, thermal, or chemical method.
- Specimen handling chain of custody - correct labeling, preservation, and transfer steps.
- MIS/robotic setup and safety - insufflation physiology, trocar placement, and bedside assistant responsibilities.
Pacing Advice
Do not front-load excessive time on the first few difficult INTRA questions you encounter - the exam draws items from a large pool and difficulty varies throughout. Flag anything uncertain, keep your average pace near 80-90 seconds per question, and use a final review pass to revisit flagged items rather than dwelling on any single question the first time through.
Managing Fatigue on a Long Exam
Because INTRA is dense and detail-heavy, fatigue can affect accuracy more in this domain than in smaller ones simply due to volume. Consider using your permitted unscheduled break strategically around the midpoint of the exam to reset focus - the clock continues running, so keep any break brief.
After the Exam
You'll receive a provisional pass/fail result on-screen immediately after finishing. Your official NBSTSA score report, including domain-level performance if you do not pass, typically follows within a few days.
