Mistake #2: Mixing Up Steam Cycle Parameters
Candidates frequently reverse gravity displacement and prevacuum cycle parameters. Gravity displacement runs at a lower temperature (250-254°F) for a longer time (about 30 minutes) because air is passively displaced; prevacuum runs hotter (270-276°F) for a much shorter time (about 4 minutes) because air is actively removed before steam is introduced.
Mistake #3: Assuming All Heat-Sensitive Items Use the Same Method
EtO and hydrogen peroxide gas plasma are not interchangeable. EtO is toxic and requires lengthy aeration; hydrogen peroxide gas plasma is faster and residue-free but cannot process cellulose-based materials or long, narrow lumens without special accessories. Candidates who pick "any low-temperature method" without matching material compatibility miss these nuanced questions.
Mistake #4: Misunderstanding Event-Related Shelf Life
Some candidates still answer as if sterile packages expire on a strict calendar timeline. Modern standards use event-related shelf life: a properly packaged sterile item remains sterile indefinitely until the packaging integrity is compromised (torn, wet, dropped) - not until a certain number of days pass.
Mistake #5: Underestimating Point-of-Use and Decontamination Steps
Candidates sometimes assume EQSM content starts at the sterilizer itself, missing the earlier steps: keeping instruments moist at the point of use, thorough cleaning (manual, ultrasonic, washer-disinfector) before assembly, and careful inspection for damage - all of which directly affect whether sterilization succeeds.
