CST EQSM Exam Tips - How to Master Equipment Sterilization & Maintenance

Expert study strategies for the NBSTSA CST Equipment Sterilization & Maintenance domain, covering sterilization methods, monitoring, and instrument care.

EQSM Domain Overview

Equipment Sterilization & Maintenance accounts for approximately 10.7% of the CST exam (16 of 150 scored items), making it the second-largest domain within Ancillary Duties. It covers sterilization methods, instrument inspection and assembly, packaging, biological and chemical indicators, and shelf life management.

What to Study First

  1. Steam sterilization parameters - gravity displacement vs. prevacuum cycle times and temperatures.
  2. The three monitor types - mechanical, chemical, and biological indicators, and what each one actually confirms.
  3. Method selection by material - which items require EtO or hydrogen peroxide gas plasma instead of steam.
  4. Event-related shelf life - the modern standard replacing older time-based expiration models.
  5. Point-of-use and decontamination workflow - what happens to instruments before they even reach the sterilizer.

Question Strategy

  • Memorize the specific temperature/time parameters for steam sterilization cycles - these are frequently tested as direct recall.
  • Biological indicator questions test the concept that it is the only monitor confirming actual sterilization efficacy, not just exposure - know this distinction cold.
  • Watch for scenario questions describing damaged packaging or a dropped tray - these test your understanding of event-related shelf life and immediate loss of sterility.

Common Traps to Avoid

  • Confusing chemical indicators (confirm exposure) with biological indicators (confirm actual sterilization efficacy).
  • Assuming EtO is preferred for convenience - it requires lengthy aeration and carries toxicity concerns, so it is reserved for heat/moisture-sensitive items that cannot tolerate steam.
  • Forgetting that flash (immediate-use) sterilization is for emergencies only, not routine inventory shortages.
  • Overlooking that implant loads require biological indicator confirmation before release whenever feasible.
